Recycling batteries: find out how to recycle your batteries in line with current regulations.

Waste battery and Accumulation Regulations 2009

Following the introduction of regulations concerning the collection, treatment and recycling of waste batteries in May 2009, manufacturers and importers are now responsible for ensuring they handle and dispose of these items in an environmentally sound way.

If you are a company, partnership or sole trader in the UK and you place batteries — including those within appliances or vehicles — on the market for the first time, you will need to register with the Environmental Agency, for portable batteries, or the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, for industrial and automotive batteries.

If your business places batteries on to the market once registering with the Environment Agency you need to sign up to work with a compliance scheme to dispel your batteries obligation. Advantage Waste Brokers in its capacity as a compliance scheme can offer batteries compliance to your business.

To find out if you are a producer of batteries please refer to this link to the Environmental Agency FAQs.
